Focus on hot water first
Shorter showers can reduce both the water bill and the energy needed to heat water. A modern shower may use roughly 8–12 litres a minute, while some power showers use more.
- Cut two minutes from each shower.
- Fit an efficient shower head if it works with your system.
- Fix dripping hot taps.
- Use a bowl rather than running a hot tap continuously.
Run full appliance loads
Dishwashers and washing machines use a similar volume whether partly or fully loaded. Eco settings are designed to trade time for lower energy and water use.
- Wait for a full load.
- Use eco mode for normally soiled items.
- Avoid pre-rinsing dishes under a running tap.
- Replace appliances for efficiency at end of life—not solely to save water.
Stop silent waste
A constantly trickling toilet can waste a surprising amount without making much noise. Add food colouring to the cistern and wait without flushing; colour entering the bowl can indicate a faulty seal.
Use rain in the garden
A water butt makes rain available for pots and beds. Water early or late, mulch soil and direct water to roots. A hose can use hundreds of litres an hour, so garden use is worth managing carefully.
