Help with your water bill

Contact your water company early if the bill is unaffordable. Companies offer payment support, social tariffs and debt schemes, and some households can have metered charges capped through WaterSure.

Ask about a social tariff

Every water company in England and Wales has a social tariff, but eligibility and discount rules vary. These tariffs can reduce bills for customers on a low income or certain benefits. Ask the company to screen you for every available scheme.

Check WaterSure

WaterSure can cap bills for eligible metered households that receive certain means-tested benefits and either have three or more children under 19 for whom Child Benefit is claimed or someone with a medical condition that requires significant extra water use.

Eligibility and cap rules are due to change in early 2027. Check the current criteria with your water company before applying.

Agree a payment plan

A company can spread payments and may match contributions through an assistance fund. Explain what you can afford after essential spending. Do not agree to a plan that immediately fails.

  • Ask whether arrears can be separated from current usage.
  • Request a benefits or income-maximisation check.
  • Ask about payment matching or trust funds.
  • Get free debt advice if several bills are unaffordable.
